Alternative protein ecosystem in Spain: from R&D to market
Explore Spain’s diverse alternative protein ecosystem, and learn more about the researchers and companies that are making it possible.

A growing R&D ecosystem gaining momentum
Our recent report on the state of Spain’s alternative protein ecosystem highlights how researchers, technology centres, universities, and research groups across the country have been actively advancing the science that enables plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-made meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy. However, this R&D ecosystem still requires support that matches its capabilities — particularly in terms of funding.
A sector with great European potential
Spain is home to companies operating across all three major pillars of the alternative protein sector: plant-based foods, cultivated meat and ingredients, and fermentation-made proteins. In recent years, Spain has experienced significant growth, attracting international investors and making it the second most attractive European country for alternative protein investment. Nevertheless, companies in the sector continue to face significant barriers to fully realising their potential, including limited access to suitable production-scale infrastructure.
How public institutions can drive progress
To unlock the full benefits of alternative proteins in Spain — from mitigating climate change and conserving natural resources to promoting public health and enhancing the competitiveness of our industry — the right public policies must be implemented. National and regional administrations play a crucial role. For this reason, our report also offers recommendations for policymakers, ranging from actions that can be implemented in the short term to more complex measures with high potential impact on the development of Spanish science and industry in the alternative protein sector.
