Communications Associate, Germany – home-based (fixed term until June 1st 2027)

The Good Food Institute Europe is looking for a Communications Associate to work closely with our communications team to drive a positive narrative for plant-based and other alternative proteins in Germany.

The Good Food Institute Europe is an independent nonprofit and think tank helping to build a more sustainable, secure and just food system by diversifying protein production.
We champion the science, policies and investment needed to make plant-based, fermentation-made and cultivated (made from cells) meat delicious, affordable and accessible across Europe.
By advancing plant-based foods, cultivating meat from cells and producing ingredients through fermentation, we can boost food security, meet our climate targets and support nature-friendly farming. How you will make a difference
Reporting to our Senior Public Affairs Manager for Germany as part of our growing Germany team, and working closely with our communications team, you will drive a positive narrative for plant-based and other alternative proteins by:
- Developing press materials like press releases, op-eds, etc, and tailoring our key messages and resources for target audiences in Germany.
- Facilitating interviews and speaker opportunities for GFI Europe spokespeople and helping our spokespeople to prepare for these interviews and events.
- Building relationships with journalists and influencers in Germany in the fields of economy, science, foodtech, agriculture, and policy, and collaborating with them on stories and intelligence to drive strategic narratives.
- Understanding and following the German conversation around alternative proteins to identify new opportunities to advance the sector and GFI Europe’s work.
- Delivering small and medium events in Germany (e.g. symposiums, roundtables, webinars), including managing service providers and budget control.
- Developing tailored website and social media content for our German website and contributing content to GFI Europe’s other digital channels, including email newsletters.
- Monitoring, evaluating and optimising GFI Europe’s communications work in Germany.
- Working with the wider Communications team to ensure consistent messaging across regions, including contributing to a forward plan of GFI Europe’s wider communications activities.
- Performing other relevant duties as required.
Who we’re looking for
The core skills and attributes needed to excel in the role are:
- A passion for our philosophy and mission.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in German – including the ability to present complex technical and political issues in comprehensible language.
- Demonstrated success with proactive media outreach, including effectively developing and pitching stories and interacting with the media to secure positive coverage. You may have previously worked in PR, journalism or another relevant field.
- Good judgement and news sense: the ability to successfully spot opportunities and ‘hooks’ to secure coverage, and to get the substance, tone and nuance of our message right.
- A can-do approach: a self-starter with the drive and initiative to take responsibility for delivering impact.
- Comfort working remotely in an evolving organisation: the ability to work well independently and under pressure, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to learn relevant digital tools, eg email marketing software, web publishing and analytics software, and social media platforms.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
- It would be an advantage to have some or all of the following attributes, but none of them are prerequisites:
- Experience of managing social media channels and websites.
- Comfort using digital tools such as WordPress and Canva.
- Exposure to working in the fields of food system transition, agriculture, nutrition, or biotechnology.

Benefits and the fine print
- Terms of employment: Full-time (flexible hours), temporary role until 1 June 2027 with the possibility of extension.
- Location: Flexible across Germany. This is a remote role, and you will be able to work from home, or anywhere you choose. We are happy to consider supporting costs for co-working to enable you to work from an office if you wish. The whole GFI Europe team aims to get together in person approximately twice per year for around 3-4 days at a time. Travel costs will be covered by GFI Europe within our travel policy.
- Salary and benefits: The salary and benefits package for all of our roles are researched and benchmarked based on similar nonprofit roles in the country/location of hire. The salary range for this role is €36,700 to €43,000.
- Right-to-work requirements: The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in Germany, and to be able to travel within the EU.
